Phophonyane Nature Reserve

Phophonyane is a private nature reserve in an area of wildly beautiful mountainous middleveld near Pigg’s Peak. The area is quite different from the highveld, still mountainous but the lower elevation means that the area has a much more diverse plant life which provides habitat for a larger range of bird species. Beautiful streams and waterfalls flow through the reserve making it ideal for day visits and picnicking, or an overnight stop. Its streams are bilharzia-free and you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the river pools or just cool off under a waterfall after a day’s hiking in the summer’s heat. It is one of the few places where you can see middleveld riverine forest.

Accommodation is provided in well furnished, comfortable cottages set in very beautiful gardens or in highly attractive tented camps. The grounds here are superbly designed and impeccably maintained. You have the choice of cooking your own food or eating in their attractive restaurant, which is really for residents, who book their meals hours in advance.
