Backpacking
Swaziland has only recently begun to market itself as a tourist destination internationally. It remains a well developed but fairly unknown destination, a situation perfect for backpackers because there are good quality backpackers lodges at reasonable prices, accommodation is easy to find, but the market is not flooded.
People give lifts to backpackers out of curiosity and buses quite happily put up with the extra luggage without charging extra. Government nature reserves like Malolotja and Mlawula have campsites that offer safe clean accommodation at very reasonable prices and in very beautiful surroundings, whilst the private Mililwane has a campsite and a backpackers lodge, Sondzela.
Swazi families in rural areas are often happy to put up backpackers and this is an excellent way to get to know the culture. There are companies like Swazi Trails who specialise in adventure sports and also have two backpackers lodges, a perfect combination for an enjoyable and affordable holiday.
